Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a certain amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats are increased in value. This value is the total of all its leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high, dependent on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to do. Item level is a widely used measurement of power and is visible on all tooltips for items. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear as PvP is restricted at a lower level. Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment players can evaluate the level of an item. It's a sign of the damage and quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a vendor can be done using the level of the item.

The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the full item description, including its value. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories about how the calculation of the item's level is made. One theory states that the item level is calculated using formulas that determine the worth of an item's stats actually are. It takes into consideration that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in the sockets increase the item's value. This can result in a calculated item's ilvl that is typically very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, as the size of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for instance by adding a level to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats are a big part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players to not restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The stat mods on an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by the player's level.

Upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. An item that is white or grey, for example, will only be upgraded one time, while an item that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.

Another method of altering the stats on an item is by affixing it.  item upgrade  are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The affixes can be used to give the item extra damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing the cooldowns), or make the item unique by adding an additional name to the item.

At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circling arrows. It will cost a set amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other methods of rerolling.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it's an exclusive item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the option to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to enhance. Similar to base equipment, it will have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. However, it does not, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves and is therefore more valuable in the initial game run as opposed to later ones, as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability that increases with each level and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can spawn or be crafted using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck, or to increase the existing Luck of the item up to 140.

Moreover, certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or created by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are expensive and not all upgrades will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item in the event that it fails.

When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which success rates can be increased and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot be greater than 100%..

The success of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of that item. All items have a base success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5%.

The upgrade overlays for items are displayed above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
